The XV Beacon History

Standing proud at the top of the prestigious Beacon Hill neighbourhood, in the heart of historic Boston, XV Beacon Hotel – the name refers to its address on the eponymous Street – stands as a testament to the city’s rich past.

The story begins in 1772, when English merchant Edward Bromfield laid the foundation stone and built a three-storey mansion on the site of today’s XV Beacon; the mansion was replaced by townhouses, then in 1903, the renowned Beaux-Arts building was constructed by William Gibbons Preston, who had studied architecture at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. It was home to the developers of the nation’s first subway, the Boston Transit Commission. Over the years, 15 Beacon Street has witnessed Boston’s dynamic history, from the Roaring Twenties to the modern era.

During the 1920s, the 10-storey building played host to influential figures and socialites becoming a hub for Boston’s high society. The Boston School Committee occupied the building from 1923 until 1999, when it became XV Beacon Hotel As the years unfolded, the property underwent various transformations, adapting to the changing times while retaining its architectural charm.

In 1999, XV Beacon Hotel emerged, meticulously restored and reimagined as a luxury boutique hotel. The restoration carefully preserved the building’s historic features, seamlessly blending old-world elegance with contemporary comfort. Today, XV Beacon Hotel stands not only as a luxurious accommodation option but also as a fine example of historic preservation. Walking into the lobby, you can see the original glass-caged elevators and grand marble staircase.

The essence

We love to capture those special details, such as the bathroom amenities, the original copper cornicing of the facade, contemporary and traditional artwork, housekeeping details, close-ups of the linens and cashmere throws, details of the marble bathrooms and mahogany panelling with solid brass details, a beautiful staircase, the original 1722 foundations, now housed within a wine cellar and private dining space. “We always feel that if a hotel does not have a collection of details that capture the essence of the hotel, they do not have the whole story,” says historic hotel photographer Michelle Chaplow.

Our mission was to accurately photograph scenes in the hotel so that essence of XV Beacon is eloquently communicated, inviting guests to embark on a visual journey showing the experience that awaits them at this distinguished Boston landmark.

Attractions photographed near XV Beacon Hotel

XV Beacon Hotel not only offers a luxurious stay but also serves as a gateway to Boston’s rich history and vibrant attractions, ensuring a memorable experience for every guest. This is New England and the whole city has a strongly British feel: red-brick buildings, parks enclosed by wrought-iron fences, familiar street names, the architecture of the Anglican churches, and numerous links to the colonial past.

In more recent times, Beacon Street is also famous for hosting two hugely successful TV series: exteriors for Cheers and Ally McBeal were both shot on this historic thoroughfare.

Acorn Street

Step outside XV Beacon Hotel, and you’ll find yourself in the historic district of Beacon Hill itself. Within minutes you will stumble upon the charming, cobblestone Acorn Street, often said to be the most-photographed street in the United States. This historic narrow lane, with its Federal-style row houses and flickering gas streetlights, offers a glimpse into Boston’s colonial past.

Boston Common

A short stroll from XV Beacon Hotel brings you to Boston Common, America’s oldest public park, dating back to 1634. This expansive green space, with 50 acres of land, has witnessed centuries of history. Once a common (shared) farmland for cattle grazing, today it serves as a peaceful oasis in the midst of the bustling city, providing a perfect place for a leisurely walk or a relaxing afternoon.

Boston Public Garden and The Swan Boats

West of Boston Common, divided by Charles Street, Boston Public Garden was established in 1837 as the first botanical garden in the USA.

The planting is breathtaking, especially in the lower common next to the statue of George Washington on horseback: there are 21,000 tulips.

You can take a trip on the iconic Swan Boats, which have glided gracefully through the garden’s lagoon since 1877. Operated by the Paget family for four generations, the pontoon pleasure-boats, which accommodate around 20 passengers, offer serene rides around the lagoon from April to October. Robert Paget designed a swan, inspired by Wagner’s opera Lohengrin, to hide the apparatus and the driver’s seat (tragically, Robert died only a year after the boats were launched). Passengers relax on wooden benches, facing forwards, while the driver operates the paddle wheel at the rear. These boats remain a beloved symbol of the city’s charm. As you are pedalled around the lagoon, you can see weeping willows and pass under the landmark bridges of the park.

Make Way for Ducklings statue

The Boston Public Garden is home to the famous Make Way for Ducklings bronze sculpture, inspired by Robert McCloskey’s 1941 children’s book of the same name. Set in the garden, the book features a pair of mallards who raise their eight offspring on an island in the garden’s pond; the famous Swan Boats are mentioned, and the mother duck also takes her babies across Beacon Street. The large-scale sculpture of mother followed by her ducklings is a delightful attraction for both children and adults.

Massachusetts State House

Dominating the skyline near XV Beacon Hotel is the Massachusetts State House, a majestic building with a gleaming golden dome which is the seat of the Massachusetts government. Visitors can explore its historic chambers and learn about the state’s governance while admiring the building´s iconic architecture.
