The hotel was designed and built by Scottish peer and keen architecture aficionado John Crichton-Stuart, the 4th Marquess of Bute, in Art Deco style. It opened in 1932, and soon gained the reputation as one of Europe’s finest hotels.
The Rock Hotel quickly became a favored destination for royalty, celebrities, and discerning travelers. Notable guests included Sir Winston Churchill, Errol Flynn, and Sean Connery, further enhancing the hotel’s reputation as an exclusive haven.

During World War II, Gibraltar played a crucial role as a British stronghold within mainland Europe. The hotel served as a refuge for military officers, providing them with respite from the chaos of war. It even accommodated American troops stationed in Gibraltar as part of their North African campaign.

In 1959, the Rock Hotel was acquired by the Bland Group and, since then, has been nurtured by the Gaggero family, throughout the generations.

As someone who transits a lot through @heathrow_airport with camera equipment, I can tell you first hand, there is no better place to stay than @sofitellondont5 , so convenient a short walk from terminal 5 to the hotel via a covered walkway. ( I have even at times taken the trolley to my room) shhhh don’t tell them:) Today I only have 150 kilos of luggage 🧳 so not too bad. Camera gear is never light and you always need to have a backup plan, if one lens fails there has to be contingency in equipment. ⭐️ The 5th of July 2O23 marks the 15th anniversary of the @sofitel Heathrow opening. A splash of colour was added to the lobby with everlasting preserved roses flown in especially from Hong Kong. I caught up with GM Alessandro Mortillaro and sales director Amandeep Gill both extremely enthusiastic as they had just returned from their 15th anniversary cake cutting. Created from the Greek words “phos,” meaning “light” or “to shine,” and “graphe,” meaning “to draw” or “to write,” the compound literally means “to paint with light.” Look at the light coming through the towel, look at the light on the glass jar. Look at the flower arrangement it’s simple, but there’s two levels to it just delivered, bringing the height of the flowers up to more or less the same height as the tap.
