First impressions really matter

By Michelle Chaplow, Founder of Hotel Essence Photography

In the world of luxury hospitality, a hotel only opens once. The very first images shared with the world become its visual identity—its signature, its story, and its promise. They form the foundation of how guests, media, partners, and the wider travel industry perceive the property. This is why high-quality photography for a new luxury hotel opening is not optional; it is essential.

At Hotel Essence Photography, we have dedicated decades to capturing the true essence of luxury hotels, from heritage icons to contemporary openings. Our mission has always remained the same: to create imagery that elevates a hotel’s spirit, communicates its brand, and stands the test of time.

1. First impressions shape a hotel’s future

Opening photography is the hotel’s very first greeting to the world. These images define expectations long before a guest arrives, and they set the tone for the entire brand.

From the tranquil beauty of Azerai in Luang Prabang, Laos, to the classic elegance of Cashel Palace in Ireland, we have seen how persuasive these early images can be. They not only tell the story of the hotel, but help to position it confidently within the luxury market from the very first day.

2. Why experience is absolutely essential

The months and days leading up to a hotel opening are exciting and full of anticipation, but they can also be complex and highly stressful. Not every space is totally finished. Some areas lack the final touches, while others may still be awaiting furniture deliveries or last-minute adjustments.

This is why the calibre of your hospitality photography team is so important.

A new-opening shoot demands more than a good camera, wielded by an enthusiastic amateur—it requires a tight-knit team of professionals with years of experience producing  exceptional hospitality photographs. The hospitality photographer frames the vision, the assistant perfects every detail, the stylist transforms unfinished spaces into luxurious, inviting rooms, and the production planner orchestrates timing, logistics, and coordination. Together, they turn chaos into carefully managed efficiency, incomplete rooms into aspirational spaces, and early-access “pilot areas” into polished images that embody the hotel’s essence. For luxury openings, this collaboration isn’t optional—it’s the difference between mediocre, messy pictures and pristine photographs that define the brand and capture the soul.

Photography of new hospitality openings demands far more than technical skill—it is a job that requires calm judgement, common-sense problem-solving, creativity, and the ability to adapt gracefully to less-than-perfect conditions.

At Hotel Essence Photography, we are accustomed to working with hard hats and reflective jackets, where the final details are being pulled together by a busy management team. We work unobtrusively around a hotel’s timelines and construction realities while producing imagery that looks serene, impeccable, and absolutely guest-ready.

3. Making imperfect spaces look perfect

In most openings, the first rooms available for photography are “pilot rooms”—beautifully finished inside, yet often surrounded by the realities of an active building site. The challenge is to ensure that the final images reflect tranquillity, readiness, and luxury… with no hint of the dust and debris just out of sight.

This is where our expertise makes all the difference. An experienced hospitality photography team with a photographer, assistant, stylist, and production planner is essential to prepare these key spaces to look picture-perfect.

We specialise in capturing spaces so flawlessly that there is no clue—not even a whisper—of the unfinished world beyond the lens, even with building works perhaps surrounding us. Every detail is carefully styled, every angle considered, every distraction eliminated. This ensures that those very first images convey the hotel’s vision, not the behind-the-scenes struggle to obtain the image.

4. Don’t be tempted to choose an inexperienced photographer

In the rush of pre-opening pressures, and overrun budgets, it can be tempting to hire a less experienced, more economical photographer to “get some shots done cheaply.” But this is a costly mistake.

These early images will appear:
– on your website
– across OTAs
– in press coverage
– in social media campaigns
– on travel blogs
– in brochures and investor decks
– and often for years to come

If the initial images fall short, they can damage perception before the hotel even opens. It is extremely difficult—and far more expensive—to reverse a weak visual first impression. Photos are quickly syndicated and almost impossible to retrieve. If a celebrity can’t take down an uncomplimentary photo of themselves, imagine how difficult it would be for a hotel to remove an image that does not show a space at its fullest potential because of inadequate lighting or styling.

Your first photographs are just as critical as your more recent ones, if not more so. They must carry authority, clarity, beauty, and brand integrity. Only an experienced hospitality photography team can deliver this level of precision and insight.

5. Building a cohesive visual narrative

A luxury hotel is an ecosystem—a blend of architecture, design, service, food, and atmosphere. Opening photography must weave these elements together into a single, consistent story.

Whether capturing the understated grace of Azerai, the sweeping heritage of Cashel Palace, or the Mediterranean charm of Fairmont La Hacienda, we work to ensure every image aligns with the hotel’s brand values and narrative. A cohesive visual story creates recognition, trust, and emotional connection.

6. Essential fuel for PR & global media coverage

Editors, journalists, and travel writers rely on exceptional imagery. Opening photographs are often the deciding factor in whether a hotel is featured prominently—or at all.

Luxury publications will only use images that meet strict editorial standards. Exceptional opening photography greatly increases media reach, especially at launch when visibility is most valuable.

7. Driving bookings and supporting rate positioning

Guests make decisions visually, and in the luxury segment, expectations are high. Strong opening imagery:
– inspires confidence
– supports premium rate positioning
– increases conversion
– creates that “take me there” desire

Luxury hotels don’t simply sell rooms; they sell experiences. Photography is the first experience a guest encounters.

8. Creating a timeless asset library

The photographs taken at opening become a long-term resource. They appear across countless platforms and often serve as the visual backbone for years. The photos we shoot today are the landmark images of the future, the ones that will be published in the history books of tomorrow.

Investing in a professional new-opening shoot by a highly experienced hospitality photographer ensures consistency, longevity, and a strong visual identity that supports the hotel through every stage of its evolution.
